The Northern Circuit

There are seven official established routes that are used to climb Kilimanjaro. The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest route, extending nearly 50-miles from the Londorossi Gate on the west side of the mountain to exit point, Mweka Gate on the south side of the mountain. The 10-day journey begins with following the Lemosho Route, before traveling to the remote and less crowded northern portion of the mountain, providing superior acclimatization compared to other routes.

The trail along the Northern Circuit crosses four ecological climate zones and stops at eight distinct high altitude campsites: Big Tree, Shira 1, Shira 2, Moir Hut, Pofu, Third Cave, School Hut, Crater Camp, and Millenium Camp.

The extra night stay at Crater Camp offers an extraordinary high-altitude campsite experience at 18,800-FT in a rare sub-Saharan glacial environment. The campsite sits on the floor of the main caldera on Kibo, where the air contains about half the amount of oxygen as sea lea level. Unique features include the Furtwangler Glacier, Ruesch Crater, and Ash Pit. Clear night skies reveal the brilliance of the Milky Way, framed by the sheer walls of the glacial ice, followed by the sunrise over the caldera rim.
